Schools in Third-World Countries – should we help them?

 

Grade Level: Upper Elementary to High School 

Duration: 45 minutes 

Subject: Social Studies / Global Awareness

 

Objective:

By the end of the lesson, students will:

  • Understand the challenges faced by schools in third-world countries.

  • Recognize the importance of education in breaking the cycle of poverty.

  • Identify ways to contribute to improving education in underprivileged regions.

 

Materials Needed:

  • Whiteboard and markers

  • Chart paper and colored markers

  • Documentary clip or images of schools in third-world countries

  • Worksheets with discussion questions

 

Lesson Procedure:

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

  • Begin with a discussion: “Why is education important?

  • Ask students to share what they think schools are like in different parts of the world.

  • Show images or a short video clip of schools in third-world countries, highlighting the challenges they face (e.g., lack of supplies, overcrowding, lack of teachers).

2. Group Discussion (10 minutes)

  • Write the phrase “Education for All” on the board and brainstorm barriers to education in third-world countries (e.g., poverty, lack of infrastructure, gender inequality).

3. Activity (15 minutes)
