Can we all learn and study? – Why is it so important?

 

Grade Level: High School
Duration: 60 minutes


Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will understand the barriers to education in the developing world and be able to discuss possible solutions.

Lesson Structure

1. Warm-up Activity (10 min) - Education and Opportunities

  • Ask students: "How would your life be different if you couldn't go to school?"

  • Show two contrasting images: one of a well-equipped classroom in a developed country and another of a poorly resourced school in a developing country.

  • Discuss their observations.

 

2. Presentation (15 min) - The Reality of Education in the Developing World

  • Play a game of “An Auction game – buying true/false sentences”; arrange the students in group of 4-5 people; ask them to read the sentenses and decide which are true/false; start the game; each team has a budget of 1000 $ and the start price is 100$; the winner is the team who will buy the biggest number of correct sentences.

3. Group Activity (15 min) - Education Barriers Brainstorming

  • Divide students into small groups. Assign each group a specific barrier: 

    • Lack of schools and teachers

    • Gender inequality

    • Poverty and child labor

    • War and political instability

  • Each group discusses their barrier and presents it to the class.

 

4. Solutions Discussion (15 min) - What Can Be Done?

  • Present real-world efforts: 

    • Organizations like UNICEF and Malala Fund.
