Helping students

 

Grade Level:  Elementary to Middle School 

Duration: 45 minutes Subject: Social Studies 

 

Objective:

By the end of the lesson, students will:

  • Understand the importance of helping others.

  • Identify ways to help people in different situations.

  • Develop a sense of empathy and responsibility toward their community.

 

Materials Needed:

  • Whiteboard and markers

  • Chart paper and colored markers

  • Storybook or video about helping others (optional)

  • Worksheet with scenarios

 

Lesson Procedure:

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

  • Begin with a discussion: “What does it mean to help someone?”

  • Ask students to share times when they have helped someone or received help.

  • Show a short video or read a story related to kindness and helping others.

2. Group Discussion (10 minutes)

  • Write the word “HELP” on the board and brainstorm different ways people help each other (e.g., at home, school, community, and globally).

  • Discuss why helping others is important.

  • Introduce the concept of empathy—how putting ourselves in someone else’s shoes can help us understand their needs.

 

3. Activity (15 minutes)

  • Divide students into small groups and give each group a scenario (e.g., “Your friend is sad,” “You see someone struggling with heavy bags,” “A new student feels left out”).

  • Ask each group to discuss and come up with ways they could help in their given scenario.

  • Have each group present their ideas to the class.

 

4. Reflection (5 minutes)

  • Ask students to reflect on how they can personally commit to helping others.

  • Have them write or draw one way they will help someone this week.

 

5. Conclusion (5 minutes)

  • Reinforce the message that small acts of kindness make a big difference.

  • Encourage students to practice helping others daily and share their experiences in the next class.
